Transurethral resection of the prostate
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgery used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate.
A resectoscope is a surgical tool that is placed via the tip of your penis and into the tube that transports urine from your bladder (urethra). Your doctor can use the resectoscope to inspect and carefully remove any extra prostate tissue that is obstructing urine flow.
TURP is a technique for treating males with moderate to severe urinary problems who have not responded to other treatments. While TURP has long been seen to be the most successful therapy for an enlarged prostate, a number of alternatives, less invasive treatments are gaining popularity. Compared to TURP, these treatments have fewer problems and a shorter recovery time.
