Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) uses shock waves to break a kidney stone into small pieces that can more easily travel through the urinary tract and pass from the body. … These small pieces move through the urinary tract and out of the body more easily than a large stone. The process takes about an hour.ESWL involves the administration of a series of shock waves generated by a machine called a lithotripter. The shock waves are focused by x-ray onto the kidney stone and travel into the bodythrough skin and tissue, reaching the stone where they break it into small fragments. For several weeks following treatment, those small fragments are passed out of the body in the urine.
